A light-filled space at Wakari Scout Hall is an ideal place for members of the Wakari Art Group to gather each week for painting and craft sessions.

The group, which started more than 60 years ago, has long provided a creative outlet for keen Dunedin artists to work on their art in a friendly and social environment.

Wakari Art Group committee members Judy Tait and Maureen Trevor said the group was thriving, with 27 active members from all across Dunedin — most retired or semi-retired people.

"We all enjoy the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, where everyone supports each other as we focus on our own artistic interests," Mrs Tait said.

The group meets weekly on Thursdays, from 10am-noon, in the Wakari Scout Hall in Holyrood Ave. New members are welcome.

Group members work in a wide range of mediums, painting everything from landscapes to abstract works, as well as fibre art, postcards and painted stones.

The Wakari Art Group will share their creations during the group’s annual pop-up exhibition and sale from next Wednesday to Saturday in the main concourse of the Meridian Mall.

The exhibition will showcase about 60 art works and group members will exhibit up to five works each, across a broad range of styles. All works will be for sale.
