Otago Community Hospice fundraising for the year has been boosted with a donation from the organisers of a popular community trailer raffle.

The Rotary Club of Dunedin South Trailer Raffle, which ran in November and December last year, collected $30,000 for the hospice.

At a meeting last week, raffle co-ordinator Sharon van Turnhout handed over the raised funds to Otago Community Hospice board deputy chairwoman Merrin Bath.

Hospice chief executive Ginny Green said the raffle was originally a project of the Dunedin North Rotary Club, but had been taken over by Dunedin South Rotary Club six years ago.

The prospect of winning a cage trailer packed with goods had ensured it remained popular.

Club members, hospice staff and dozens of volunteers had spent many hours selling raffle tickets at stalls across Dunedin before Christmas.

"We had fantastic support from malls, supermarkets and the big stores — in particular Mitre 10 Mega, who are always very helpful to the hospice," Ms Green said.

"And the community feel of the trailer raffle is amazing — everyone who comes and buys a ticket has a story to share."

The annual donation from the raffle was a very welcome addition to the hospice’s annual fundraising target of $5 million.

"Having consistent support from projects like the trailer raffle is vital to our success in meeting that target," Ms Green said.
