The Dunedin City Council continues the search for a tenant for the former Nova Cafe site in the Octagon.

The popular cafe ceased operations in mid-March when the lease held by Fraser Brothers Ltd ended.

At the time, director Mark Fraser said it was an "incredibly difficult" decision not to renew the lease and it was with "great sadness" he and his brother Nick had chosen to close the doors.

The pressures of operating a business through lockdowns and border closures have been a constant and major challenge, Mr Fraser said in late February.

The Fraser brothers operated Nova for five years, taking over from their father Howard, who held the lease, under Nova Cafe Ltd, from April 2003 until 2018.

A DCC spokesperson said work was continuing to find a suitable operator to lease the facility.

"Given the significance of the site and the support it provides to the adjacent Dunedin Public Art Gallery, it is important we secure an operator capable of meeting the range of services required."
