Supermarket chain Progressive Enterprises recently awarded the multimillion-dollar contract to Lund South Ltd, and work had begun sinking pilings on the 1.1ha site, Progressive's national communications manager, Luke Schepen, said when contacted yesterday.
The supermarket will be 3800sq m when completed, with parking for 179 vehicles, and will require between 100 and 150 full-time, part-time and casual stuff, Mr Schepen said.
"We will be advertising for those positions at least a couple of months out from the [March] opening," he said.
After an Environment Court mediation between Progressive and a small, neighbouring community-run museum next to the former car yard, the court gave rulings in November last year on 38 aspects of the development, in areas of heritage, site contamination, services, engineering plans, traffic and parking, staff travel and signs.
Those included changes to the supermarket roof and walls on its south and southwest side, near the museum.
