Facebook puts search on steroids

Facebook has souped up its search function, allowing access to all public posts on the social network.

People have previously been able to search individual posts, but results were limited to posts from their friends.

In a blog post, Facebook said the upgrade, dubbed 'Search FYI' would open access to its index of 2 trillion posts.

"We're updating Facebook Search so that in addition to friends and family, you can find out what the world is saying about topics that matter to you," it said.

Search results will be organised in to groups - top posts, posts from friends and groups and public posts.

There are plenty of positives for the curious, but most - if not all - people have made a post at one time or another they would prefer a potential boss or partner didn't see.

Thankfully, you can keep the past where it belongs.

Time to review your privacy settings

Facebook users can click on the padlock icon on the top right of the profile to view settings, where the 'Who can see my stuff' option will show them who sees the posts they're currently publishing.

Even if it says you're currently posting to friends only, that may not have been the case in past.

At the bottom of the options behind the small padlock icon is a 'See more settings' link. Click on that, then click on "Limit past posts' to hide them from public view.
