Cromwell College: Rob Gillespie

Whether he's on dry land or in the water - it is no exaggeration to say Cromwell College prefect Rob Gillespie (17) is in his element.

The 17-year-old says his two favourite sports, hockey and swimming, have more in common than many may think.

"Although they seem very different sports both rely on individual skill.

"As goalie you have to commit to stopping a shot at goal - even if someone tees off on the front foot and I have stopped a few which hurt. But both sports are fast paced and require explosive speed and focus."

Rob says although he was "forced to start swimming" when he was 5, he now trains for up to two hours, four days a week before competitions.

He has grown to love the sport and lists a recent highlight as winning division II national 50m and 100m backstroke events in Wellington in April.

Rob has also represented Central Otago men's hockey representative (Ian Smith tournament 2007-08).

While he says being a prefect has not cured him of an aversion to public speaking he has enjoyed more involvement in school management, and thinks the leadership roles he has assumed this year may help "in the board-room in future."

Achievements: Cricket 1st XI (2006-08); Cromwell College senior swimming champion (2007-08); hockey 1st XI (2006-08); backstroke national division II swimming championships 2nd 200m (2008); academic school prefect (2008); Spirit Trophy, Spirit of New Zealand (2005); Lions leadership camp (2008); Matau award for top year 10 boy (2005); 100 level calculus University of Canterbury (2008).

Role model: "[Former national and Canterbury cricket representative] Chris Harris. He always makes something of what he has got, and gives his all."

Hopes for the future: "To attend University of Otago to study accounting and finance to become a chartered accountant and play representative sport."
