Moving from Auckland to Cromwell without his family did not bother Sean Knight - in fact, he thrives on living independently and pursuing activities he loves.

The 17-year-old moved from Waiuku two years ago to take part in Cromwell College's Outdoor Pursuits Programme.

He lives in one of five flats occupied by pupils who attend the school.

They cook for themselves and have to keep everything tidy for the regular inspections.
‘‘It's really good,'' he said.

The programme allowed him to snowboard every week, tramp and mountain bike along with other activities.

He also completed the South Island Secondary School Adventure Race, in a traverse team. ‘‘The whole year has been amazing.'' Sean is also heavily involved in a variety of sports, including rugby, hockey, football and cricket.

He likes to keep busy because ‘‘it's better than doing nothing''.

Hockey is his favourite sport and he played for the college's first XI and the Cromwell men's B team, earning the Cromwell Hockey Club's Fair Play Award.

The Cromwell under-18 rugby team also benefited from his talent and he won the most dedicated player award last year.

He even found time to help coach the Cromwell women's rugby team.

Last year, he played for the Cromwell first XI football team and this year he played for the college's first XI cricket team.

As well as land-based pursuits, Sean enjoys scuba-diving, becoming a qualified open-water diver when he was 14. He loves going snorkelling with his father.
