Obituary: Michael O’Neill, musician

Michael O’Neill was an integral part of history-making Auckland band The Screaming Meemees, the first local band to enter the charts straight in at No 1 with the single See Me Go.

The stars of what was known as the North Shore invasion, the Meemees shone briefly but brightly: formed in 1979 they split just four years later, with a single album.

O’Neill, the band’s lead guitarist, moved into clothing design and writing.

He returned to music in 1989 as a member of These Wilding Ways, before founding a recording studio with fellow Meemee Peter van der Fluit.

Michael O’Neill died on December 4.  — Agencies/Allied Media
