Men's Basketball semi finals
Paul Dwyer is at the Edgar Centre for the Men's Basketball semi finals. Whatever the result this Saturday, a new name will go on the Dunedin men’s club basketball trophy.
The Mid City Lions will face the City Rise Bombers for the title, both having come through thrilling semifinals on Saturday. It is the first time in over 20 years that either the Mid City Magic or the St Kilda Saints will not feature in the final.
Both semifinal winners had to come from behind in the final quarter. Watch highlights of both games here also Paul Chats to Peter Drew outgoing general manager Basketball Otago, Magic coach Sam Fielding, Bombers coach Mark Bracewell and Magic Lions player Christopher Christof.
Women's Prem Netball - College v Physed
Paul Dwyer is at the Edgar Centre looking at the Netball A grade game with Physed playing College in the first round of the top four. We chat to Zoey Flockton, Poppy Kilworth, Charlotte Underwood-Nocol and Millie Hassell after the game.
We also get a season update from Dunedin Netball General Manager Lee-Anne Anderson.
Women's Basketball
Paul Dwyer is at the Edgar Centre covering the Women's A Grade semifinals and chats to Junior Tall Fern Elise Carline who has just returned from the World Championships qualifying tournament where she had to mark a 7 foot 2 opponent.
Women's Hockey
PD is down at the Macmillan Turf covering the Women's Premier game and chats to Irish International Goalkeeper Holly Micklem along with Otago Goalkeeper Rachel Lecky. He also gets an update of how the season is going from Otago Hockey General Manager Andy McLean.
Roller Derby
On a deathly cold Tuesday night PD and Sports Chat headed out to the Edgar Centre to have a look into the mysterious world of Roller Derby. PD spoke to Fox z, Flat liner, Vintoxication, Rough house Rosie, Mike Wigowski, Open Buffet, Prim Reaper and Boa Constructor I kid you not. This is the sport of the exotic alias. PD found out about Jammers and Blockers and why you need 15 refs when there is only 10 skaters on the oval at any one time. He also finds you have to be on your skates for 12 months before they put you into a full on game. It's well worth a watch.
Netball - Juniors
PD is back at the Edgar Centre with the netballers again but this time the goal is much lower to the ground. We chat about the junior school's competition and catch up with the teams from Grants Braes and St Bernadette's.
Hockey - Men's Premier Division
ODT Sports Chat: this weeks sees PD down at the Macmillan Hockey Turf for the men's premier division game between Kings United, who are currently placed 2nd on the table, versus University Whales who are placed 4th. He also has a chat with CEO of Sport Otago James Nation about the Otago Sports Awards and how he is still playing Premier Hockey at 48 years young.
Basketball - Men's Premier Competition
PD is back at the Edgar Centre for ODT Sports Chat catching up with Men's Premier Basketball and where the competition is at. We get up close and personal with the St Kilda Saints v City Rise Bombers middle of the table clash and we talk to the winners at games end. Stay with and find out who the games best player was.
Netball - 100 Yrs in NZ
PD is back out at the Edgar Centre talking Netball. He finds out we are celebrating a 100 years of Netball and there is a function presenting Centennial Service medals to some of the great volunteers. He talks to some of the recipients. He also takes a look at the unbeaten TColl team and their match up with the Magpies. He talks to the winning coach and captain after the game.
Junior Hockey
PD is back at the Hockey turf in his second in the series on Otago Hockey for Sports Chat. He talks to Joelene Casey the Community Hockey Manager about the 100s of kids invading the Turf on a Thursday afternoon and how she controls them all. He talks to the coaches and managers and four of the wee kids teams about their hockey experience.
Basketball
PD is back out at the Edgar Centre for the second of his series on grassroots basketball in Dunedin for ODt Sports Chat. He talks to Rebecca the competitions and officials manager about how you organise 140 teams of young kids on a Thursday afternoon in a three-hour period without it descending into absolute chaos!
He also catches up with year 3 kids from Kaikorai and St Clair schools to dissect the game they played which ended in an 8-all draw.
Swimming
PD headed up to Moana Pool for ODT Sports Chat to talk to Otagos’ newest Olympians Kane, Caitlin and Erika. To be fair he was more interested in where coach Lars Humer was, does Kane do his share of work around the flat and who demands their own lane more Caitlin or Erika? Find out if he gets the answers to these big issues.
Netball
PD is back at the Edgar Centre, talking to Dunedin Netball GM Leanne Anderson about what is happening in Dunedin netball.
He is stunned to find out there is over 230 teams playing across all grades this year and unlike in club rugby, nobody is getting paid.
They do it for the love of the sport. PD also asks about the pathways to higher honours for aspiring netball talent.
Hockey
PD takes on a couple of Otago Black Sticks in the goalmouth at McMillan Hockey Turf before he talks to head honcho Andy McLean about what is happening in grassroots Otago Hockey.
He tries to find out why they are the No 1 province in NZ and have been for the last two years, in this episode of ODT Sports Chat.
Basketball
PD talks to Otago Basketball general manager Peter Drew about all the hype around New Zealand’s fastest growing participation sport.
Paul wants to know why there are 360 school basketball teams now in Dunedin alone, and yes that number is correct.
