Dunedin Symphony Orchestra : 'From the Southern Marches'

'From the Southern Marches' tells the story of the people who have settled in Ōtākou/Otago
(Māori, Scots and English, Chinese etc.), depicting the cultural, social and economic
historical development of the region (the term ‘marches’ referring to an area of land which is
on the border with another).

From the Southern Marches was the brain-child of George Griffiths, historian, writer,
journalist who assembled all the texts for setting to music and then commissioned by
composer Anthony Ritchie. The piece brings together lots of different texts from our history,
set to music, which touch on different aspects of southern history: early pakeha settlement,
interactions with the Tangatawhenua (with Māori instruments making an appearance), the
gold rush, the development of industry, the 1925 Exhibition, and so forth. (Anthony Ritchie)

Three of our vocal soloists are University of Otago graduates, Emma Fraser (soprano), Anna
Leese (soprano) and Joel Amosa (bass-baritone). They will be joined by Manase Latu (tenor)
an alumni of the University of Auckland. The City Choir Dunedin and Southern Youth Choir
join the full orchestra and soloists under direction of Principal Guest Conductor Simon Over.
