Polson Higgs partner Carole Adair says the Dunedin business advisory company has changed in tandem with larger societal shifts.

‘‘There has been a big change in attitude to flexible hours and part-time work,’’ she says.

‘‘Thirty years ago, when I went part-time to raise my family, it was very different.’’

Brought up in Dunedin, she was recruited by the company straight from the University of Otago.

She notes that, in general, it was harder for women to progress at the same rate as men in their careers at that time — but that is definitely changing.

Accountant Sophie O’Connell is completing her first year with the company after completing a degree at the University of Otago.

‘‘I’ve come through with a new generation and it’s a lot easier,’’ she considers.

There are more women than men studying at university in 2020, and Polson Higgs’ male-to female ratio mirrors that.

Along with non-discriminatory policies, Polson Higgs is a signatory to WEPs (United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles).

‘‘Everything in this firm is about achievement and ability,’’ Adair says. ‘‘It’s not because we have a quota to fill.’’

International Women's Day is recognition for all the ways that women contribute to society, she says.

‘‘It shows that it’s normal for women to be successful in all areas,’’ O’Connell adds.
