Wardrobe confessions: Megan Martin

Television viewers are used to seeing TVNZ reporter Megan Martin in suits, with microphone in hand. But she is also a wife and mum to two preschoolers. She let Lea Jones have a look through her wardrobe to check out her style when the camera is turned off.

Q: How would you describe your style?

A: If it can be called style ... Mother mode: very casual ... comfort is essential. Usually jeans and T-shirts with boots or sneakers. Reporter mode: Simple corporate! Suits and tops.

Q: Has it evolved over the years?

A: I've always been a casual dresser when I'm not at work. I guess as I've had children, I've gone for looser fitting tops to cover up the mummy tummy! I used to wear a LOT of black, but I make an effort to buy colours now. Mind you, that's not always easy, many shops seem to be wall-to-wall black!

Q: Describe your wardrobe.

A: Lots of suits - nine at last count; a few shirts - although I hate ironing so they don't always get worn; lots of merino - best fabric ever, especially in the South. (I grew up in Invercargill, so I appreciate warm layering!) Six pairs of jeans - can't live without them. My latest favourites are the skinny/straights (not skins ... I like to be able to move).

Q: Who are your favourite designers?

A: I really like Mild Red, although I don't own any of their gear. I love the layered look. And, I love the femininity of Charmaine Reveley, and the durability of IceBreaker.

Q: What is your favourite item of clothing?

A: My Glassons cardis! Yes, I know I'm many years above the Glassons target age-group, but I own several of their plain cardigans (with the buttons ... you know the ones) in different colours.

Q: What was the last clothing item you bought?

A: A black suit from Max. It's the second one I've bought ... the last one has lasted seven years, and lots of use. It's a wool blend fabric, and doesn't crush easily. Brilliant for those stories when I'm sitting in the car for hours.

Q: What has been your best fashion bargain?

A: My turquoise heels from Number One Shoe Warehouse. I think I paid $30 for them about five years ago. They're very comfortable, they go with everything (except green, of course) and I always get comments on them. If only people knew the truth!

Q: What has been your biggest fashion mistake?

A: Buying clothes that look good on other people ... but that really don't look good on me. I bought a lovely black fitted work dress ... I think I wore it once. The waist was too high, and I always felt my puku poked out. It now looks really good on my friend.

Q: A fashion tip?

A: Wear what makes you feel good.

Q: A beauty tip?

A: Moisturise.

Q: What would you buy if money was no issue?

A: Lots of beautiful shoes ... and lots of Mild Red!
