Orgasmic ice-cream

Southland dairy farmers Peter and Glenys Williams are producing Orgasmic Organic Ice Cream from the milk of their Organic Acres farm near Otautau.

The ice-cream is made by Deep South in Invercargill and is available in four flavours: virgin vanilla, strawberry seduction, chocolate climax and kinky caramel.

They certainly play on their brand name!

Delicious labna best in show
The annual Katrina Gordon Hospitality Trade Show, held in the Dunedin Town Hall last week, is always an interesting mix.

People in the hospitality business can see new products and old favourites; everything from ice-creams to frozen snacks that need to be deep fried, from coffee and wine to beds and linen, from computer systems to tax services.

Several interesting new products caught my eye and tastebuds.

Anne-Marie Berry, from Kaikoura, is producing some delicious labna, a Middle Eastern yoghurt cheese with a refreshing tang.

It won champion cheese in the hobbyist section in the 2004 New Zealand Cheese Awards, which spurred her on to produce it under her Green Girl Organics label.

Her labna is preserved in oil and the small balls are good in salads, with pasta, or on antipasto platters.

Sausages and salamis
Also from Invercargill were some German-style salamis and sausages made by Guido Schromages, smallgoods maker at Bowmont Meats.

He joined the factory late last year and now makes his own spice blend for his cooked salamis which include a delicious smoked venison, and several sausages, both flavoured and traditional like bratwurst and chorizo.

They can be found at the Invercargill farmers' market at Southland Boys High School on Sunday mornings, from the factory shop or from www.bowmontwholesalemeats.co.nz

It boils down to this
Among the ready-made sauces and mayonnaises on various stalls were balsamic reductions. I liked the flavoursome French Maid crème of balsamic distributed by Groenz, and its new raspberry-flavoured crème of balsamic, both imported from Italy.

Balsamic reductions are delicious drizzled on many things, from avocado to salad, from steak to fresh strawberries.

Convenient, locally made
Penny Dawson, of Pasta d'Oro in Dunedin, has a new line of single-serve convenience meals.

These light meals, available frozen or chilled in supermarkets, include beef, venison, chicken, lentil or pumpkin lasagne, beef ravioli and spinach and ricotta tortellini.

Ideal for an impromptu meal at work or in a motel, or when you are in need of a hot, light meal - just poke a couple of holes in the wrap and microwave.

Hard to get a cup of tea
Interestingly, among several stalls promoting coffee and tea, and offering cups of espresso to visitors, I only found one, Stewarts, that was also offering cups of tea.

Much of the hospitality industry is not yet switched on to the possibilities of good teas, but no doubt it will come.
