Two Otago companies brought home the silverware from the New Zealand Ice Cream Awards.

While Tip Top won the large manufacturer supreme award for the second year, for its hokey pokey, and Puhoi Valley Cafe the boutique manufacturer supreme award for the second year, for its Matakana roasted coffee affogato ice cream, the southerners made a good showing.

Wanaka-based Pure New Zealand Ice Cream won eight awards, including a gold award for its vanilla bean ice cream made from milk collected daily from a Wanaka dairy farm.

In the ice cream category, hokey pokey, mascarpone date and orange, kaffir lime and ginger, and manuka honey and fig all won silver.

In the gelato category, salted coconut and mango and blackcurrant and coconut were also awarded silver.

Lastly, roasted black sesame and chilli won silver in the open creative category.

Owners Richard and Tracey Bullock said they were extremely happy with this year's results.

‘‘There were over 350 entries this year so the fact that we achieved the success we did was definitely a big moment for us,'' Mrs Bullock said.

‘‘Winning gold for our vanilla bean ice cream is a considerable achievement, as the integrity of the ice cream cannot hide behind dominant flavours,'' Mr Bullock said.

Queenstown and Arrowtown-based Patagonia Chocolates showed its strength in making sorbets, winning gold for its boysenberry, strawberry and apple sorbet and silvers in the open creative section for its orange and basil sorbet and in the general sorbet section for its raspberry and strawberry flavours.

It also got two silvers in the ice cream category for its mango and frozen yoghurt and mocha cream flavours, and silver in the kids' choice section with its Tramontana flavour.
