Tina Cross (ONZM) is a Women's Refuge ambassador and singer. The Whare Pounamu Dunedin Women's Refuge street appeal was held at the weekend.

What was the best birthday present you ever received, and why?

When I was 9 years old I received a big girl's bicycle, or at least one that appeared to be full size. It had all the bells and whistles. Considering not one of my six brothers and sisters had ever been given a bike, I thought I was pretty special.

The first time my mum rode it to the local dairy it was stolen, never to be seen again. I owned it for exactly one month and I'll never forget what it looked like.

What is one strong childhood memory?

My dad used to drive buses when I was a wee girl. From about the age of 3, he would sit me at the front of the bus in one of those funny little single seats. On his command, I would sing to the passengers. It never mattered to me whether they wanted to listen or not, they had no choice. The good news is no-one complained.

What is your message?

Never doubt yourself - we all shine in our own way.

If you were going to an island and could take only three things, what would they be and why?

My toothbrush, because good dental hygiene is a must. Sunblock, because if my teeth are intact, my skin needs to be looking healthy. A bookcase full of books in case there's no-one else on the island (and my reading glasses).

What's something only your family knows about you?

That I take a huge amount of vitamins and supplements daily.
