Corby in line for further sentence cut

Convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby is set to have another six months shaved from her sentence.

The governor of Kerobokan jail, Gusti Ngurah Wiratna, confirmed on Monday that the 35-year-old had been recommended for the sentence cut as part of Indonesian Independence Day celebrations on August 17.

Corby, who was caught in 2004 attempting to import 4.1 kilograms of marijuana into Bali in her bodyboard bag, had her 20-year sentence slashed by five years in May after she won an appeal for clemency from Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Mr Wiratna said Corby had been recommended for another cut based on her record of good behaviour.

"She was not involved in any incident like riot. That's why we shall recommend her for remission," he told AAP.

"But it's still only suggestion. It's up to the central government to grant it."

The latest cut, if approved by the Justice and Human Rights Ministry in Jakarta, would bring Corby's official release date forward to March 2017.

However, the former beautician from the Gold Coast could walk free from Kerobokan in mid-2015 if she is granted further maximum remissions of eight months a year, or even sooner if granted parole.

Parole is very rare for foreigners in Indonesia and Corby would have to satisfy strict conditions to be successful.

The complex application process would include the Australian government providing a guarantee that she would not breach the conditions.

Renae Lawrence, the only female member of the Bali Nine, has also been recommended for a sentence cut of six months.

Lawrence, from Newcastle, is serving 20 years for her role in a failed 2005 plot to smuggle more than 8kg of heroin from Bali to Australia. She has already been granted more than two years in remissions.
