Another poll needed as officer changes hats

One Otago University Students' Association by-election will soon be followed by another.

Ruby Sycamore-Smith, who already held the position of campaigns officer on the association executive, was voted in yesterday as association welfare officer.

This by-election was required after two posts on the executive were not filled at the main association election last August.

Ms Sycamore-Smith gained 222 votes of the 451 votes cast, defeating Golda Matthias (207). Twenty-two votes were cast for ''no confidence in these candidates''.

Keir Russell was elected unopposed as postgraduate students officer on 63 votes, with 22 no-confidence votes cast.

Announcing the results, association secretary Donna Jones said that since Ms Sycamore-Smith had sought the larger role of welfare officer, another by-election would be needed to fill the campaigns officer post, which she would be vacating.

That by-election would be held as soon as possible. The modest number of votes was not unusual for a by-election, she said.
