Women’s health staff transfer study

The University of Otago says the expertise of the Women’s Health Research Centre will remain, despite staff transfers to Victoria University.

Yesterday, five of the centre’s seven staff, and centre director Assoc Prof Bev Lawton moved their research  from their University of Otago Wellington base to Victoria University.

University of Otago pro-vice chancellor of  Health Sciences Prof Peter Crampton said the university was disappointed.

"The university, colleagues and friends of Assoc Prof Lawton are disappointed at this loss of some of its women’s health research capability at the University of Otago."

The centre, which was founded in 2005, would continue to "build further capacity with plenty of effort and activity in women’s health", he said.

Assoc Prof Lawton said her team would, at Victoria University, continue long-running projects on maternal and infant health, and Maori women’s health.

Both Otago and Victoria universities were "great institutions" and she would continue to collaborate with people working in women’s health at  Otago, she said.
