Feline fans had a day to remember at the Civic Hall in Green Island yesterday.

Dunedin Cat Rescue held a special cat adoption day.

Organiser Debbie Foster said it ‘‘exceeded all expectations’’.

‘‘We had a queue outside the door about an hour before we opened. It was carnage.

‘‘We’ve held days like this before, but nothing as big as this.’’

Ms Foster said more than 40 cats were officially ‘‘homed’’ yesterday — all of them microchipped and desexed, or waiting for the procedure to happen next week.

‘‘We have cats listed on our website, but this sort of thing doesn’t work nearly as well online.

‘‘I suppose there’s something about having a cat look at you that makes the difference.’’

There were still about 170 other cats on the books waiting to be homed, so another adoption day would be inevitable, Ms Foster said.

‘‘It’s really satisfying to see this response.’’

One of the lucky people to secure their new cat was Tyleh Ryan. It was in fact her second rescue cat — she adopted one four years ago.

‘‘My partner and I are moving into our own house, so we thought now was the perfect time to add another cat to the family.

‘‘We’d be OK with filling our place with cats.

‘‘Our current cat is very clingy, so it will be interesting to see how he will react to the new addition.’’

Their new cat, a tuxedo tabby named Ebisu, was very quick to make a connection, she said.

‘‘She just leapt out of the cage to meet me.’’
