A trust was launched in Dunedin last night to remember babies who have died.

A Star is Born chairwoman Julie Moyle said the Dunedin-based charitable trust was established so keepsake packages could be given to bereaved families who face an in utero, neonatal or early postnatal death at Queen Mary Maternity Centre at Dunedin Hospital.

``We established there is a need in Dunedin for people to be able to remember their babies who have passed away.''

Mrs Moyle lost her son Benjamin at 17 weeks' gestation.

The packages cost up to $330 but are free to eligible families.

The trust was raising funds to give up to 40 families a package each year.

About 140 people attended the trust launch at the Otago Cricket Long Room last night with an auction raising money to buy the packages.

The gifts of remembrance includes photography, 3-D hands and feet castings and a personalised pendant.
