In the digital age, where you can literally "plug in and play" almost anything, the Dunedin Camera Club decided to go back to basics for its 50th anniversary celebration and have a good old-fashioned slide show.

Club president Ross McIvor said slide shows were a major part of photography in the early years.

It was where photographers learnt the craft of photography, and it was how photos were shared with large audiences, he said.

Monday night's slide show, in the Mornington Presbyterian Community Centre, featured presentations by Gordon McDonald which showed what Dunedin city looked like in the 1860s compared with the 1960s; as well as shows by Chris Hewitt, life member Tony Bishop and past member John Hart.

The presentations also showed the changes in photography since the club's first meeting in the Radiant Hall on April 17, 1962.

"Back then, the club had a handful of members. Now, we have more than 80."

Mr McIvor said there would be several more presentation evenings between now and the end of the year as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations.
