More than 400 Baptists from across New Zealand are in Dunedin this week for the church's annual meeting and conference.

Dunedin City Baptist Church leadership team member Helen Geddes said the Baptist Churches of New Zealand and the New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society Hui started today and would run until Saturday.

It would include a powhiri and hui banquet at Araiteuru Marae today, a Baptist research dinner at Caversham Baptist Church tomorrow and a women's breakfast at Caversham Baptist Church on Saturday.

Guest speakers include Baptist national leader Craig Vernall, members of the Carey Baptist College team, New Zealand Baptist Missionary Society facilitator Rachel Murray and Baptist ethnic ministries team leader Steve Davis.

A series of workshops would also be held at the Dunedin City Baptist Church's (DCBC) new facilities in Concord, Mrs Geddes said.

The hui was last held in Dunedin in 2004, she said.

''It's lovely to have a venue now that we can actually host this. That's what's made it possible for us to do this.

''It's a reasonably large conference,'' she said.

The Baptist denomination is a network of more than 240 churches - the Baptist Churches of New Zealand.

The conference delegates would be looking forward to 2017, when Baptists would celebrate the 500th anniversary of the ''Reformation'', Mrs Geddes said.

In 1517, Martin Luther nailed his theses to a church door in Wittenberg, which started a firestorm of doctrinal reformation that reshaped the church.

The hui also aimed to introduce church members to five strategic priorities the church's leaders believed would help promote a healthy mission and ministry life.
