Bright orange blindfolds replaced bird guano yesterday as the latest accessory for the statue about town.

Robbie Burns, Peter Pan, Dr D.M. Stuart, James Macandrew and the Signal Hill lookout monument were all wrapped in the blindingly orange material.

Even the little brass penguin statues in the Exchange did not escape the treatment.

The exercise was a promotional stunt for the 2011 Dunedin Fringe Festival, which has a theme this year of "Finding your Fringe".

"The fringe is nearly here and it's time for people to take their blindfolds off and see what's going on," Dunedin Fringe Festival director Paul Smith said yesterday.

"We're asking people to step into the unknown. Artists do that all the time and create magic out of nothing. We're here to celebrate that and experience life on the fringe."

The Dunedin Fringe Festival starts on Thursday and runs until March 27.
