Garden centres were inundated at the weekend as  "hordes" of Dunedin residents made the most of the fine weather and tended their vegetable patches.

The weekend has traditionally been one in which homeowners prepare their gardens and the city’s weather made sure this was the case as temperatures reached the high teens and the sun came out for long periods on all three days.

This led to plants and other gardening items being swept from the shelves.

Mitre 10 Mega Dunedin garden centre manager Craig Campbell said at times queues were "out the door" as keen gardeners stocked up.

"I’ve never seen it that busy on a normal trading day. Even compared to other Labour Weekends, this would be our best in many years."

Wal’s Plant Land, in Mosgiel, also had a busy weekend, some visitors taking advantage of the warm temperatures to enjoy the business’ mini golf course.

Dunedin resident Sheryl McCammon said she and her husband bought "pretty much everything" as they stocked up on garden supplies at Nichols Garden Centre yesterday.

Nichols retail worker Kirsty Harris said the store ran out of trailers by 9.30am.

"It’s the amount of compost we’ve been selling. Everybody is trying to get stinky this morning."

Labour Weekend was always weather dependent, but the sun meant everyone was "out in droves", she said.
