Funding for emergency grab bags and a mural has been ''ring-fenced'' by the Mosgiel Taieri Community Board.

The board decided last week to set aside $3200 to fund the bags and to paint a wall mural in a park on the corner of Gordon and Factory Rds.

Board chairman Bill Feather said the incoming board could decide after the October local government elections how the funds would be split between the two initiatives.

The bags would contain hand-held radios and other equipment.

They would be used if a civil defence emergency was declared.

Earlier, Mr Dillon had applied for a grant for $1663 for the Mosgiel Taieri Emergency Response Group to buy six emergency grab bags.

Instead, the board decided the grab bags should be a board initiative rather than be considered as a grant application from the group.

The board decided to approve a request for $500 from Emeritus Prof Martin Ferguson to restore the grave of Mosgiel founder Arthur Burns.

•The board declined a request from Arthur Burns Preschool for $700 for sunhats and hi-viz shirts for pupils and teachers.

•East Taieri Church will receive $1600 from the community board for a family event at the Mosgiel market day.

•Church community facilitator Joy Davis said the church would run the event in partnership with the Mosgiel Business Association and Neighbourhood Support.

•East Taieri Preschool was told its application for $1419 to pay for part of a project to buy outdoor play equipment was ''too narrow''.

The application was declined.

•Providing health services was not the board's responsibility, Mr Feather said.

Asthma Otago had sought $1000 to go towards a salary for a physiotherapist to run weekly exercise programmes, but was declined.

•The board moved to keep the gates unlocked at West Taieri Cemetery.

''I think with the information we have received and the discussions we've had, there is nothing there to suggest to me we should alter the status quo, which is to leave the gates unlocked but closed,'' Mr Feather said.

The motion was supported by every board member at the meeting.
