Amalgamated Builders Ltd is hoping one of its three entries in the country's premier building awards this year will bring it some recognition at a national level.
The Dunedin building firm entered one house and two commercial projects in the 2009 Registered Master Builders House of the Year and Registered Master Builders Commercial Project Awards.

Amalgamated Builders Ltd Dunedin manager Richard Johnston said the company had entered the awards annually for about the past five years and was fortunate to have been successful at various levels.

‘‘We've had a number of section wins for the Otago and Southland area, but we haven't been successful at the national level as yet,'' Mr Johnston said.

‘‘We've really only been in the awards for five years or so now because we are mainly commercial builders, who only do one or two houses a year, and prior to that there really wasn't anything for commercial projects at the awards.''

The company's commercial entries include the Dunedin Chinese Garden in the tourism category, and the University of Otago's Hunter Centre in the education category.

Mr Johnston said the company had high hopes the Chinese Garden would earn them some recognition.

‘‘We'd like to think we'd get some sort of mention for that one. We've done well in Otago and Southland in the past, but hopefully we can win a national award this year.''

Mr Johnston said despite the time and cost involved in entering the awards, he felt they did serve to lift the company's profile.

‘‘All you get out of it is the accolades, and hopefully exposure, if you do well, but you would like to think it all pays off in the end.''

Amalgamated Builders Ltd's two commercial projects will be judged on Saturday and Sunday this weekend and the company will be notified of the results in the regional section by August this year.

National winners will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland on November 14.
