Bus bike-rack delay frustrating for councillor

A suggestion it would be more than a year before the Otago Regional Council considers the issue of bike racks being put on public buses has been met with frustration by Cr Bryan Scott.

"Why does it take so damned long to do something really simple?" he asked at a finance and corporate meeting this week.

Changes made to land transport rules meant buses could now be fitted with bike racks.

The draft annual plan hearing panel had considered four submissions asking for the bike racks and it had recommended the council consider their inclusion in a review of quality standards which was likely to be next year.

Cr Scott suggested the council start the discussions and planning now rather than in 12 months' time.

Committee chairman Duncan Butcher said there were some conditions that had to be met before the racks could be put on, including extra "swing room" for buses, the type of bus and stops, as well as costs to be considered.

"We want to make sure we get it right."

Cr Michael Deaker said the topography of Dunedin made it a "complicated issue". While racks had been trialled in Christchurch, it was a flat city, he said.

The issue would be discussed at the next joint transport working party meeting, as there would also be requirements the Dunedin City Council would need to meet, such as ensuring there was a "swept path" through routes so other traffic, the buses and bikes did not collide.

"It's a big job. It does make a lot of sense but [it taking] anything less than a year is unrealistic."
