There's no place like home.

Dunedin man Tim Doidge (35) has returned to his family home to continue his battle against a rare brain cancer.

His rehabilitation work was continuing but now the therapists were making house calls, Mr Doidge said.

The doctors were sticking with the probable diagnosis the brain cancer was T-cell central nervous system lymphoma.

Mr Doidge said he was booked to have his final MRI scan at Dunedin Hospital today to find if the chemotherapy was working and the cancer was reducing.

A team of doctors would compare the results with a past scan and if more than half of the cancer was gone, then chemotherapy would continue. If more than half of the cancer remained the chemotherapy would stop, Mr Doidge said.

However, he was hoping for the best because he had made ''good gains'' since starting chemotherapy, including being able to walk again and being more alert.

The chemotherapy did not make him feel sick, damage his kidney or liver function, or give him ulcers.

''My body has handled the chemo quite well, so hopefully it goes in my favour.''

Karline Doidge (30) said to prepare for her husband's homecoming, several Dunedin businesses helped finish the renovation work her husband began before becoming sick.

The businesses also installed safety features in the house to help Mr Doidge get around.

''People have been so amazing and working all hours,'' Mrs Doidge said.

The finished work included completing a kitchen renovation, painting the lounge yellow and other odd jobs.

''Some painting here, some gibbing there,'' Mrs Doidge said.

More business had offered to help and another working bee was planned, she said.

Mr Doidge said the work had been a ''huge help'' to making his homecoming more comfortable.
