The four Green Party co leader candidates had five minutes to impress party supporters on Saturday.

Gareth Hughes, Vernon Tava, Kevin Hague and James Shaw made their claims for leadership alongside co leader Metiria Turei, at the St Patrick's Community Centre in South Dunedin.

Mr Hague's main point was that he ''had a strong background in leadership both inside and outside of Parliament'' and was ''ready to make the step up''.

Mr Hughes talked about his desire to ''re engage with younger voters and grow votes'', especially in Auckland where he said he would base himself if he was elected co leader.

Mr Shaw said his experience working in many different areas of the world encouraging sustainable business gave him the advantage.

''I have the ability to bring people from different backgrounds and social standings together to solve problems.''

Mr Tava's main point was the Green Party needed to ''break away from the left wing, right wing debate'' and ''position ourselves as the eco centric party we are''.

The co leader candidates are travelling the country to deliver their speeches to members.

Dunedin Green Party delegates will get the consensus of Dunedin members and final voting will occur at a Green Party annual meeting on Saturday, May 30.

The results will be announced at 2pm that day.
