After 60 years of marriage, Vic and Marion Bulleid, of Dunedin, are still on Cloud Nine.

Well, that is what it seems like for the former Oamaru couple, high up in their top-floor apartment at Frances Hodgkins Retirement Village in Forbury.

Celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary yesterday, the couple said their relationship was built around mutual respect and, as Mr Bulleid said, "you had to love one another''.

The couple met through friends in Oamaru, where Mr Bulleid managed the family drapery business, and Mrs Bulleid (nee Muldrew) was a nurse.

They were married in Oamaru, and brought up three daughters and a son, and later built a holiday home at Kakanui.

Mrs Bulleid (89) said the couple's marriage was helped by having shared interests and a supportive family.

Mr Bulleid (90) said he was lucky to find such an agreeable and co-operative person.

They had spent the past 22 winters in Queensland with family, which had helped their health.

They moved to Dunedin to be closer to family 12 years ago, and last year moved into the retirement village.

The couple, who have eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, had a small celebration planned last night.
