Many Dunedin people are expected to take the "once in a lifetime" chance to view the transit of Venus at the Beverly Begg Observatory next Wednesday.
The latest transit of Venus, during which the planet Venus can be seen crossing the lower part of the sun, is expected to begin about 10.15am and end about 4.45pm.
The Dunedin Astronomical Society is making its Beverly Begg Observatory site, in Robin Hood Park, Belleknowes, available for members of the public to watch the event, using some of the society's telescopes, equipped with filters for safe viewing.
If the weather was suitable, viewers would see "a small black dot [Venus] slowly wandering its way across the sun", Mr Ash Pennell, of the astronomical society, said.
Mr Pennell warned people never to look directly at the sun through a telescope or binoculars, unless these were fitted with special filters, because of the risk of causing permanent eye damage or blindness.
