Do you fancy yourself as a bit of a Tom Cruise or Cameron Diaz lookalike?

If you think you've got star quality and you want to bring your acting skills out from behind closed doors, Kaikorai Primary School pupils are offering a cameo role in their big-screen film The Quest to anyone with $100 in their pocket.

Since the start of the year, the school's 307 pupils have been involved in making the film, which highlights the school's values - kindness, aspiration, independence and keenness (Kaik).

Principal Simon Clarke said the plot centres on two main characters who do not embrace these values, and follows them through a portal into different worlds where they are taught the importance of the values.

Pupils ''brainstormed'' the plot and the script, and then began filming at the school and other locations, including Larnach Castle, the Otago Museum butterfly house, Dunedin beaches and op shops, he said.

''All 307 pupils will feature in the movie in some way.

''Most have a close-up and a line.''

Mr Clarke said the pupils were editing the film and adding music, and it was planned for the premiere to be at the Regent Theatre on October 30.

The school was also hoping to raise about $6000 using PledgeMe, an internet site where people can give money to support innovative projects.

''We're hoping to raise $6000 so that no-one will have to pay an admission fee. This way, there will be no barriers to anyone in our community being able to go.''

Mr Clarke said the pupils were also offering a cameo role in the film for any budding actor who wants to show their theatrical side.

''$100 can buy you the role, but if Tom Cruise comes along, the price might go up,'' he said.
