Christian music festival may be held for 5 more years

The organisers of Mosgiel's annual Christian music festival are praying for a bright future, with plans to extend the event for another five years.

Incedo Incorporated (formally known as Youth for Christ), a non-profit Christian organisation, has applied to the Dunedin City Council for land-use consent to stage the Samstock Music Festival between 2009 and 2013.

The three-day festival has attracted crowds of up to 800 people since its inception in 2000.

Samstock director Kirstin Harray said the event was aimed at high school pupils and tertiary students.

Local and national bands would perform at the event, which would also include a range of sports, games, workshops and life skills seminars.

The festival was alcohol and drug-free.

A chaplin, youth workers and pastors would be on site, she said.

The event has the support Dunedin police, the Otago Taieri Agricultural and Pastoral Society committee, University of Otago chaplain the Rev Greg Hughson and the Straight Up Trust.

The application has been publicly notified, with submissions closing on December 3.

No date has been set for a hearing.
