After renovations, preparations and dusting, Dunedin’s First Church has reopened for Sunday services.

Services had been held in the nearby Burns Hall since January while renovations were done.

Yesterday, congregants returned to the church, which first opened in 1873, and First Church of Otago minister the Rev Ed Masters said people were pleased to be back.

"We had a great gathering.

"We worshipped God and celebrated the work that was done, and it was really good to be back in the church," Mr Masters said.

Renovations had included replacing the lights, switchboard and electrical wiring, overhauling the heating and other restoration work.

On Saturday, all hands were on deck polishing, dusting, moving furniture and getting everything set up in time.

The renovation project cost more than $600,000.

Mr Masters said the church had received grants from the Synod of Otago and Southland, the Otago Community Trust, the Alexander McMillan Trust and the Dunedin Heritage Fund.
