The Dunedin City Council has offered 85 free parking spaces as a sweetener for commuters put out by roadworks in Anzac Ave.

From Monday, the St Andrew St pay-and-display parking area, behind the Station Apartments on Anzac Ave, will have its $5-a-day cost dropped until the end of June while the upgrade of State Highway 88 is under way.

Cr Andrew Noone announced the initiative yesterday, and said it had been put in place because of the inconvenience drivers would experience during the work.

The council and the New Zealand Transport Agency earlier this month outlined a $350,000 cycle lane project, road resealing and footpath upgrade for the road.

As a result of the project, 44 parks would be lost between Frederick St and St Andrew St, but 35 would be created between Frederick St and the Leith bridge.

Cr Noone said the council hoped the offer would allow time for commuters inconvenienced by the changes in the area to consider their options and adjust to the new layout for all-day parking.
