A man who reported hearing gunshots in South Dunedin overnight will appear in Dunedin District Court over making a false statement to police.
Senior Sergeant Liz Waru, of Dunedin, said the man reported hearing three gunshots in Bathgate St at 3.45am, then hung up his phone.
A police cordon was set up in the street but the Armed Offenders Squad was not deployed.
The caller, who had a history of making false statements, was charged and would appear in court next week, she said.
Making a statement about gunshots was serious and had wasted police resources.
''It's frustrating.''
