A vehicle travelling at more than 100kmh, with an allegedly drunk driver behind the wheel, crashed through a barrier and landed just metres from where a young girl was sleeping in her bedroom yesterday, police said.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken, of Dunedin, said the 24-year-old male driver had just overtaken two vehicles in Musselburgh Rise, heading towards Andersons Bay Rd, when the car, which had three passengers, failed to take a bend at 8.45am.

It had been travelling at a "ridiculous speed", more than 100kmh, when it went through a crash barrier and launched through a fence.

It then smashed into a concrete garden shed, flipping over and landing 5m below the road in a backyard in Royal Cres, he said.

The car landed 2m from the girl's bedroom.

"It was an absolute miracle that no-one was killed," Snr Sgt Aitken said.

The driver had a breath-alcohol reading of 754mcg and would appear in the Dunedin District Court later this week charged with dangerous driving and driving with excess breath-alcohol.

"It was crazy to be driving at that speed, in that condition," Snr Sgt Aitken said.

Some of the occupants were helped out of the upside-down car by the fire service.

None was injured, Snr Sgt Aitken said.
