A Dunedin man was waiting for a head-on collision to happen in front of his eyes as he followed a motorist repeatedly crossing the centre line on Sunday, he says.

Richard Mountain (33) was driving from Maori Hill to North Dunedin when he began following the white Peugeot hatchback at the Highgate roundabout.

He kept a safe distance and started filming as he watched the motorist's driving worsen as they descended Lachlan Ave and on to Warrender St, where the car crossed the centre line while taking a corner and narrowly missed two vehicles travelling uphill.

''It was very, very close to making contact.''

The driver continued on the wrong side of the road and the car nearly hit another vehicle near the intersection of Warrender and Queen Sts.

Mr Mountain followed the car as it turned left into George St, before it made another left turn into Duke St.

It was not the first time he had seen poor driving in Dunedin, but this was ''definitely the worst''.

He could not see the driver, who was sitting low in the driver's seat.

He reported the incident to police using a Community Roadwatch form.

''I want to get them off the road before they kill someone''

A police spokeswoman said they had received the complaint and were investigating.
