A man is in hospital in a serious condition after an incident at a Central Dunedin property.

A police spokeswoman said they received a call at 5.40pm to a reported assault in Stafford St.

The incident had taken place at an "indoor location", she said.

A St John spokeswoman said it responded with one ambulance crew and the rapid response unit.

Upon arrival, they located one patient in a serious condition, who has now been transported to Dunedin Hospital, she said.

The ambulances and three police cars were seen outside the Stafford Gables Hostel.

Later, a police spokeswoman said police arrived at the scene and found a man with injuries.

Although initially reported as an assault, police do not believe that one has occurred, she said.

So we are not seeking anyone in relation to the incident, she said.
