Police are appealing for a man who intervened after a woman was assaulted in central Dunedin to come forward.
Detective Sergeant Neil Lowden said police understood a man approached the young woman from behind and assaulted her in Bath St, shortly after 1am yesterday.
She had minor injuries.
Anyone who had noticed any suspicious people or activity in the area at the time was urged to contact police.
"Particularly, police would like to speak with a male believed to have confronted the alleged offender and intervened, which police believed prevented any further harm to the victim," Det Sgt Lowden said.
The woman was treated at Dunedin Hospital and discharged.
