Curtain comes down on bid for freedom

A man wanted by police was found hiding behind a shower curtain in a Dunedin flat after he failed to appear in court because he had heard a new judge was sending people to prison.

Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross said an arrest warrant was issued for the 25-year-old after he failed to appear in the Dunedin District Court on charges of shoplifting and breaching community work.

Police were called to a Leith St address following a non-voice emergency 111 call from the property.

A search of the premises found the man hiding in a bathtub behind a shower curtain.

The man told officers he had not appeared in court as he had heard the new judge was sending people to prison, Snr Sgt Ross told the district court.

The man had a previous history of breaching community work, he said.

The man appeared in the Dunedin District Court yesterday. He was remanded on bail to reappear later this month.
