Facing much older competition did not stop the pupils from a Dunedin primary school winning a regional Lego competition.

Two teams from North East Valley Normal School have qualified to go to the national First Lego League challenge in Auckland next month.

Teams from St Hilda’s Collegiate, Otago Boys’ High School and Dunedin North Intermediate will also be going.

One of the North East Valley teams was first overall and the other won the robot design award in the Dunedin leg of the competition earlier this month.

Year 6 pupil Leith Del Castillo said the league involved a combination of building with Lego and using coding software to add movement to their creations.

They essentially made robots which completed "missions" set out by the league.

The children designed the robots from scratch.

Classmate Natalie Masters said there were about 15 missions for them to choose from and, on competition day, they would have about two and a-half minutes to complete each of them.

At the Dunedin competition, the North East Valley teams completed five missions each and were aiming to do seven at nationals.

They met twice a week and sometimes would sacrifice their weekends and lunchtimes to work on their designs.

Team-mate Eva Hayes said they were "absolutely terrified" at the Dunedin competition.

However, they had to remain calm and not get stressed to stay on top of the task at hand.

"But we were all screaming inside," she said.
