Cyclist 'harassed, mooned'

A female cyclist says she was chased on the wrong side of Dunedin's Princes St as she tried to flee a van load of young men who were hurling abuse and baring their buttocks.

The cyclist, who does not want to be named, said she was riding along the street when a white van began following her about 6.40pm on Sunday.

She was ''harassed, verbally abused and mooned'' by the young men, and was forced to cycle on the other side of the road to avoid them.

However, she said the van continued to follow her down the wrong side of the road, with the occupants screaming abuse.

''Cars began driving towards us as they were forced to get back into the correct lane ... this did not stop them yelling abuse.''

The cyclist, who is aged in her early 20s, said she was forced to stop on the footpath and the occupants eventually gave up.

She had noted the van's number plate and contacted police, who were investigating the incident.

She said she had cycled all over New Zealand and had ''never experienced anything like this''.
