The Dunedin City Council’s staff code of conduct is being updated to put more emphasis on positive behaviour.

There would be a shift away from a primary focus on unacceptable behaviour to “a strengths-based approach grounded in the values of commitment, accountability, wellbeing and collaboration”, a council report states.

The agenda for yesterday’s audit, risk and assurance committee meeting outlined the updated code as a principles-based document, setting out clear expectations for behaviour and decision-making.

There would be “greater emphasis on the positive behaviours that support a respectful, inclusive and high-performing workplace”.

The updated code is expected to be presented to the committee in September.

Its preparation followed an organisational values refresh.

It was standard to keep employee-related materials aligned and updated regularly, the council said.

A series of policies had been reviewed and developed.

Other documents undergoing review included the assets management policy, a policy about disposal of assets and a digital acceptable use policy.
