Debt collectors to chase stadium rates

Ratepayers who refuse to pay the portion of their rates earmarked for Dunedin's new stadium will be chased up, warns Otago Regional Council.

Some ratepayers have told the council they won't be making the payment, while others have deducted the amount from the total bill, council spokesman Wayne Scott said today.

"We are working our way through the rates payments received to identify those who have withheld any part of their bill.

"Council will advise those people that they must pay all parts of their rates assessment or they risk the outstanding amount being forwarded on to a collection agency."

The threat of non-payment has come from a number of ratepayers who have complained about the $188 million cost of the new 30,000-seat stadium, the bulk of which will come from rates.
