Mosgiel residents could know by the end of this month whether the proposed Countdown supermarket will be built.

A hearing into the proposed development was held in Mosgiel's Salvation Army hall in June.

The supermarket was planned to occupy the former St Mary's School site, with opening hours of 8am-9pm and 174 car parks provided on site.

The June hearing included Dunedin City Council planning staff, a hearing committee of Dunedin city councillors, representatives from Progressive Enterprises who own the Countdown brand, and independent submitters.

Since then, communication had continued between the council and Progressive, committee chairman and councillor Andrew Noone said this week.

A final clarification of details was being sent to Progressive this week.

Once that clarification was received, DCC planner Amy Young would review her initial report, Cr Noone said.

Progressive would have a right of reply to respond to that review, which would then end the hearing process.

At that point, the hearing committee would make its decision and release it to the public.

Cr Noone said it was expected that announcement would be made late this month or some time in September.

He said the plan was still largely the same as that presented to the hearings committee in June, with the main points of discussion focusing on details which would improve the effects on neighbours and traffic flows.

While he was not able to say what outcome was expected, he said all parties were ''working positively'' together.
