It could have been very much worse, but a search and rescue operation for a missing Brighton toddler had a happy ending yesterday.

The alarm was raised when a 3-year-old boy disappeared from his Brighton Rd home shortly before noon yesterday, Inspector James Ure said.

Footprints were found heading into the water at the beach across the road, which raised fears for the boy’s safety.

Several police cars sped to the scene.

Shortly afterwards, police were flagged down by members of the public, who had discovered the young child further along the road.

He had not been in the water, Insp Ure said.

"It's a happy outcome."
