Disruptive pupil solution bid

Discussions are continuing in a bid to find an alternative service for disruptive secondary school pupils following the closure of the Phoenix Centre in Dunedin last term.

The Phoenix Centre, which worked with disruptive pupils who needed help readjusting their behaviour, closed at the end of term 1 (on April 1), following an independent evaluation of the service which found it was not meeting the Ministry of Education's required outcomes.

In March, Secondary Principals Partnership chairman and Otago Boys High School rector Clive Rennie said the main concern of secondary schools in Dunedin was to have an alternative service in place when the second school term began.

Discussions were continuing to find the best use of the funding associated with the Phoenix Centre, he said.

"As yet, there is no alternative in place for kids who might have gone to the centre," Mr Rennie said.

Members of the Dunedin Secondary Principals Partnership will meet the Ministry of Education's Group Special Education representatives next week to continue discussions, he said.
