Drink-drive numbers disappoint police

Police are disappointed the drink-drive message is not getting through to some motorists.

Otago Coastal police targeted drink-drivers in an operation at the weekend. Seventeen people were processed for excess breath or blood alcohol.

At one checkpoint, in North Dunedin, six people failed tests in two hours, Otago Coastal road policing manager Senior Sergeant Steve Larking said.

"We know that people who drink and drive are more likely to be involved in serious and fatal car crashes,'' he said.

"It's good to remove these people from the roads, but I'm disappointed that the drink-driving message doesn't appear to be getting through to people.''

Police tested 2800 drivers during the weekend operation of whom 105 showed signs of some alcohol consumption.

"Seventeen were processed for drink-driving and will be appearing before the court or receiving infringement notices,'' Snr Sgt Larking said.

"Seventeen, that's a high number of drink-drivers for a weekend and that's disappointing.''

People should avoid driving if they intended to drink alcohol.

"With Christmas approaching police will be increasing their focus on drink-driving,'' he said.
