The driver of a truck-and-trailer unit was unaware a log had fallen off the trailer on State Highway 1 yesterday until he was pulled over by police.
A motorist contacted police after seeing a log fall from the northbound truck-and-trailer unit, south of Waihola, about 12.45pm, Senior Sergeant Ian Temple, of Dunedin, said.
''The driver didn't realise it had fallen from the trailer.
''It didn't cause any problem on the road because there was no-one behind, but someone following a long way behind saw it fall off.''
The log caused no obstruction as it ended up on the side of the road, he said.
''It's very lucky.''
A police commercial vehicle inspection unit later stopped the vehicle in Dunedin.
Snr Sgt Temple declined to name the firm but confirmed a prosecution was likely.
